The Nationwide Foundation supporting community-led housing

In recent years there has been a shift to more community-led affordable housing developments across the UK. Until now, many community groups have been working in isolation on their housing projects, albeit successfully. Funding from the Nationwide Foundation will now enable an alliance to be formed, bringing together participants and experts working in community-led housing. The umbrella term, community led-housing, encompasses housing which is shaped and controlled by a group representing the residents or the wider community.

The Nationwide Foundation has awarded £155,150 over two years to the Building and Social Housing Foundation for the creation of a community-led housing alliance, which gets underway this month. The alliance will help the organisations which have already made progress, to explore ways to collect and share their knowledge; and to bring them together to generate new ideas. It should also help new projects to complete their journeys faster and more successfully, as well as communicate widely the benefits of community-led housing.

Under its Decent Affordable Homes strategy, the Nationwide Foundation has witnessed and funded much good work in the community-led housing space. It expects to see real benefits from the emergence of a central hub to support and expand these housing models, which in turn will lead to the creation of more decent affordable homes for people in housing need.
