The Nationwide Foundation: changing lives for the better

Lisa Suchet, Nationwide Foundation chief executive

The Nationwide Foundation has received high praise from independent evaluators for its strategy between 2009-2013. The strategy funded charities tackling housing and homeless issues or financial exclusion affecting disadvantaged or vulnerable people.

Evidence collected by CASS Business School showed that £3 million was raised by charities supported by the Nationwide Foundation, in extra grants, benefits and debt reductions for beneficiaries. Some of those benefits will be ongoing, amounting to an even greater legacy.

The projects the Foundation funded provided financial advice and support to over 6,000 vulnerable people, with about half of them benefitting from full, and sometimes lengthy, case work. In addition, approximately 1,300 people received help and advice to improve their housing situations.

As well as reviewing the projects funded by the Foundation, evaluators assessed the Foundation's approach to working with the charities it funded. They reported that the Foundation compared extremely favourably with other funders, in terms of relationship building; the commitment to keeping in touch on a regular basis; the willingness to offer additional support and help in a timely manner; and the comprehensive and flexible nature of that support.
