Key Facts about The Nationwide Foundation

1. To date The Nationwide Foundation has approved 2,399 grants to charities throughout the UK totalling £22,361,713.

2. To date over five and a half million members have signed over the windfall benefit to The Nationwide Foundation, which they would otherwise receive in the unlikely event of the Society converting.

3. The Foundation receives an annual donation from Nationwide Building Society. This is usually £2 million a year, with the exception of 2000 when the Foundation received £7 million. The additional funding was used to run the award winning New Generation Initiative (NGI) which supported five parenting charities and benefited thousands of UK families in need.

4. The Foundation is managed by a team of four who visit charities across the UK from Stornoway to Penzance and Derry to Hastings.

5. Over the past decade the Foundation has supported communities and people in need. The funding criteria has evolved over the years as follows:

  • 1998-2000 Community Support / Realising Potential
  • 2000-2002 Volunteering / Quality of Life / Tackling Disadvantage and Discrimination
  • 2002-2005 Volunteering / Rural Communities
  • 2005-2010 Domestic Violence / Prisoners’ Families / Young Offenders

6. In 2006 The Nationwide Foundation won the Grantmaking category at the Charity Awards, one of the most prestigious accolades in the charity sector, in recognition of the innovation and achievements of the NGI. In addition, the Foundation was also nominated in the Overall Strategy category of the Third Sector Awards for the evaluation of the NGI, which was recognised with an IVCA award (International Visual Communication Association).
